What is MSc Cyber Security all about?
The MSc Cyber Security is a specialist master’s degree designed for graduates who want to gain knowledge and skills in advanced topics in data and network security to combat 21st century cyber threats.
Taught in our purpose-built laboratories, the curriculum will cover:
- Computer systems and network security
- Cyberattacks and defence
- Intrusion detection and prevention
- Data security
- Network monitoring
These are built on a strong foundation of knowledge in computer networks, both wired and wireless, using industry-standard systems.
You will undertake an individual project as part of your master’s degree which allows you to carry out a substantive work based project on a topic of your interest either in the University or, where possible, in a company.

Are there any English language requirements?
Yes, for students whose first language is not English, you will be asked to meet some minimum requirements.
You will need to have completed the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) assessment of the Academic module (not the General Training) with an overall score of 6.0 and no sub-test less than 5.5. And, it’s important to note that these must have been gained within two years before the start date of your course.
Alternatively, there are some English language qualifications that are equivalent and that UWS will accept for home and international (inc EU) students for this course. These are:
- CAE (Cambridge Certificate of Advanced English): 176 overall; no sub-test less than 169
- CPE (Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English): 176 overall; no sub-test less than 169
- Trinity College London Integrated Skills in English: ISEII with the minimum of a Pass in all sub-tests
- PTE Pearson Academic English: An overall score of 59 to 64 with no element below 59 (for programmes that require IELTS 6.0 with no element below 5.5). An overall score 65 to 75 with no element below 65 (for programmes that require IELTS 6.5 with no element below 6.0).
If you don’t meet these requirements entirely, you might still be able to do this course. You can complete a pre-sessional English language programme which will be combined with the MSc. You can find out more about the Pre-sessional English programme here.
